"Arjay Introduction of Chess Openings"
‘‘Since the beginning of the sixteenth century, Chess theory has been the subject of intense investigation. The majority of this study has been dedicated to the Chess Openings. Since these opening moves will eventually determine the course of the game, it understood that the first moves are those of greater importance’’
1. e4 e5, 2. Nf3 Nc6, 3. Bb5
1. e4 e5, 2. Nf3 Nc6, 3. Bb5
The Ruy Lopez Opening (also known as Spanish Game), is by far the most frequently played and the one that has accumulated the greatest body of theory. The Ruy Lopez opening falls into a group of Chess openings called “Open Games” and derives its strength from the logic of white's second and third move.
2. e4 e5, 2. Nf3 Nc6, 3. Bc4
The Giuoco Piano Opening also known as the Italian Game, is a major branch of the double King-Pawn openings, and one of the oldest Chess openings that has been analyzed for many years. This opening has seen a revival recently, with both Anatoly Karpov and Garry Kasparov playing the white side.
3. Nf3 d5, 2. c4
The Reti Opening belongs to the flank games category. The tension between the Pawn at c4 and the opponent's Pawn at d5 is a constant remainder. Many world champions have played this opening like Kasparov in the final match game of 1987.
4. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Bc5 4. b4
When black responds with 1 ... e5, it is called an Open Game and thus, making the Evans Gambit Opening fall into this category. As in most Gambits, white gives up an early Pawn in exchange for development and setting up an ideal Pawn center.
5. d4 d5 2. c4
The Queen's Gambit from the Closed Games Openings, may give white to squeak out a small initiative but for black, it has the advantage of being very solid. Every world champion has played the black side of the Queen's Gambit which follows 2. c4.
6. e4 e6
A Semi-Open Games related, the French Defense is an opening that most players either love or hate. On his first move (1... e6), black denies an early active role to his Bishop at c8 in return for a solid nature of the defense. Former World Champions Mikhail Botvinnik and Tigran Petrosian liked to play it as black.
7. c4
The English Opening, from the Flank Games group, was developed by Howard Staunton. In this opening, white avoids or delays the occupation of the center with Pawns. Once considered a minor diversion, the English is now one of the main openings and all modern world champions have played it.
8. e4 Nf6
A Semi-Open game, the Alekhine Defense is one of the few major Openings to bear the name of a former World Champion: Alexander Alekhine, and yet, he played it on rare occasions. Black's first move (1... Nf6) invites white to attack the Knight.
9. e4 Nc6
An Unorthodox Game, the Nimzovich Defense allows white to build a strong center. This Opening has gathered a fairly large following in amateur and even professional ranks but has yet to find an advocate among the World Champions.
10. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 Bb4
The Nimzoindian Defense from the Indian Games, is undoubtedly the greatest contribution from Aron Nimzovich to the openings theory. In the battle for the control of d4, black is willing to exchange his dark-squared Bishop for the white Knight at c3.
11. e4 g6, 2. d4 d6
In the Pirc Defense Opening, black plays a very early “g6”, allowing white to dominate the center. When black player replies to 1.e4 with a move other than 1. ... e5, is called a Semi - Open Game. Pirc Defense leads to umbalanced positions and tends toward less games drawn than the Open Games.
12. e4 e5, 2. f4
The King's Gambit opening dominated the Open Games about a hundred years ago. It recalls the romantic era of the last century in which Adolph Anderssen and Paul Morphy reigned supreme. Boris Spassky and Bobby Fischer included it in their openings.
13. d4 f5
The Dutch Defense belongs to the Closed Games Openings. In general, this opening leads to quieter and longer struggles. Many modern Grandmasters include it in their repertoire and former World Champions Mikhail Botvinnik and Max Euwe played it.
14. d4 Nf6 2. c4 c5 3. d5
From the Indian Games Openings (1. d4 Nf6), the Benoni Defense is a very fighting opening at least in its modern form. The nature of this opening gives it great appeal although white's firm control of the light squares discourages players from adopting it.
15. e4 c5
The Sicilian Defense, from the Semi-Open Games and unlike the Open games, does not share typical formations. The Sicilian is the sharpest defense because after 1. e4 c5, the symmetry is already broken but the battle for the center is not conceded.
16. d4 Nf6, 2. c4 e6, 3. g3
The Catalan Opening, from the Indian Games branch, is a somewhat unusual opening designed to avoid the Nimzoindian and Queen's Indian Defenses. Garry Kasparov used it in a match against Korchnoi in the 1980's. It usually leads to a draw game.
17. d4 d5, 2. c4 e6, 3. Nc3 c5
Altough the Tarrasch Defense from the Closed Games branch is not the favorite of most top players, it helped win Championship titles to Garry Kasparov and Boris Spassky. In return for having an isolated d-Pawn, black obtains a dynamic piece play.
18. d4 Nf6, 2. c4 g6, 3. Nc3 d5
The Gruenfeld Defense, from the Indian Games, tends to be highly transpositional and involves the Fianchetto of either Bishop at g7 or b7. The black Pawn at d5 prevents white from establishing the ideal Pawn center by playing e4.
19. e4 c6
From the Semi-Open Games, the Caro-Kann Defense black's second move ( 2... d5 ) confronts the white Pawn at e4 and does not force his Bishop to sit idly at c8. Even though players often castle on opposite flanks, the Caro-Kann Opening cannot be defeated by direct attacks in most cases.
20. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7 4. e4 d6
From the Indian Games Openings, the King's Indian Defense is one of the most popular Chess Openings. Being relatively easy to play, is based on solid principles of development and counter attack and at the same time the complexity of the positions which arise, create spectacular combinations and attacks.
